Rajasthan Birds - Photography by Keith Rawling

Indian Roller

These are only a few of the wildlife photographs I have available. Nearly all of these pics were taken in the Udaipur area.... a very good starting point for bird photography or bird watching. For more information see at the bottom of the page.

Udaipur is a great centre for birdwatching and bird photography. Around the town and the lakes are quite a few opportunities to spot something different and get close enough to get good photos. For the rarer species obviously it's better to get out in the countryside. Ask for Samshu and he will take you out in the countryside in his Auto Rickshaw and spot the birds for you. A lot of these photo were taken on 'Samshu's Safaris". Recently I met Rishiraj Deval, one of the most knowledgeable chaps on Indian wildlife I know. A man with incredible eyesight and hearing to match. You can stay on his farm and he can guide you around local hotspots. Groups welcome. See Rishiraj's images- http://www.indianaturewatch.nethttp://www.indianaturewatch.net/view_cat.php?tag=rishiraj%20deval Or contact Rashiraj direct rishiraj_deval@yahoo.co.in

Species identified through 'Birds of India' by Krys Kazmierczak. One of the best Indian reference books.

Techy Info: In India I travel light. Maybe two cameras, and two lenses. Currently I take a Nikon D90 and Nikon D7000, the 18-200mm and the 28-300mm lens. 300mm is easier to track birds in flight than a 400 or 500mm. Set to shutter priority to capture the birds in flight and to limit camera shake. The light is fantastic so stay on 200 ISO most of the time. This works well in Rajasthan... In Southern India, Western Ghats, for example, you will need to upgrade. See Mysore Birds

Most images shown are suitable as 300dpi for publication. A4 photo prints are available now. This page updated 21/2/12
